Tips to Maximizing an Air Conditioner’s Efficiency - Part 2
In our previous blog, “Tips to Maximizing an Air Conditioner’s Efficiency - Part 1,” we covered simple, no-cost steps a homeowner can take to help their air conditioner run efficiently during the summertime. In Part 2, we explore the benefits of hiring an HVAC technician to check over the system to ensure its operating at maximum efficiency.
Escaping the sweltering summer sun isn’t easy if the air conditioner can’t effectively cool a home. The best cure for this is hiring a professional HVAC technician to thoroughly inspect the system to ensure its components are in good repair. A technician should inspect the following items to determine what is affecting the system’s efficiency.
Thermostat
The technician should check that the thermostat works to ensure it’s not the cause of too-warm air. Sometimes, the issue is as simple as setting the right temperature through the thermostat. Other times, the thermostat is no longer calibrated and cannot maintain the correct temperature. In these cases, the best option is to replace the thermostat.
Ductwork
The technician should inspect the ductwork for leaks and adequate insulation. Additionally, the ducts may be too small to carry enough cooled air to keep the space sufficiently cooled. In these cases, the homeowner may consider having new ducts installed.
Drain line
The HVAC technician will check the drain line to ensure it’s not clogged. A visual inspection can determine if the drain line is flushing the condensate correctly.
Vents
Another section of the system that needs to be checked is the airflow and return vents. All vents must remain unblocked as any material or object could restrict airflow, thus reducing the system’s cooling capacity.
Electrical components
The technician will inspect the system’s electrical components to ensure all connections are secure and there are no immediate concerns. If the system is not working, they can access the circuit breakers to determine if it has been tripped. They will check whether the thermostat is turned on or not.
Change the filter
An air conditioner’s filter must be cleaned or replaced regularly. For most systems, twice a year is sufficient. Air filters full of dust and debris limit the airflow through the system, resulting in low airflow and, thus, warm rooms.
Outdoor unit
The outdoor condenser unit is where the heat exchange takes place. It is essential to keep this unit free from any plants, dirt, and other debris. Also, the fins on the outdoor unit must always be clean to allow for efficient heat expulsion.
Coolant levels
Technicians use specialized gauges to determine if the air conditioner has ample coolant within the system to cool the home. However, there are signs that a homeowner can learn to recognize that indicate a coolant problem. If everything else is working correctly, but the system is blowing warm air, it’s likely caused by low refrigerant levels.
Reputable HVAC service technicians can help homeowners keep their air conditioning systems working efficiently throughout the summer. Regular, bi-annual maintenance ensures the system works efficiently any time of year.
